Citral is a naturally occurring acyclic monoterpene aldehyde consisting primarily of two geometric isomers: geranial (trans-citral) and neral (cis-citral). It contributes a fresh, sharp lemon character to aromatic compositions and serves as an important ingredient in perfumery, flavour development and specialty chemical manufacturing. Commercial Citral may be produced by isolation from essential oils or by chemical synthesis, depending on the supplier and grade.
