Polysorbates are versatile non-ionic surfactants widely used in cosmetic and personal-care formulations to help combine, solubilize and stabilize oil- and water-based ingredients. Polysorbate 20, 60 and 80 provide different emulsification and solubilization characteristics based on their fatty-acid components.
Polysorbate 20, Polysorbate 60 and Polysorbate 80 are ethoxylated sorbitan esters belonging to the non-ionic surfactant family. Their hydrophilic polyoxyethylene structure allows them to reduce interfacial tension and support the incorporation of oils, fragrances and other oil-soluble materials into aqueous formulations.
Polysorbate 20 is based on lauric acid and is commonly used as a solubilizer and emulsifier. Polysorbate 60 is based on stearic acid and is widely used in creams and emulsions. Polysorbate 80 is based mainly on oleic acid and is commonly used as an emulsifier and solubilizer in skin care, hair care and cleansing formulations. These ingredients may also be used in combination with other surfactants or emulsifiers to improve formulation stability, texture and uniformity.
