Black Cumin Seed Oil is a vegetable fixed oil obtained from the seeds of Nigella sativa L., a flowering plant belonging to the Ranunculaceae family.
The oil is characterized by a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, with linoleic acid generally being the predominant fatty acid, followed by oleic acid and palmitic acid. Published analyses show natural variation according to geographical origin, cultivar, cultivation conditions and extraction process.
Black Cumin Seed Oil also contains a small volatile fraction and naturally occurring minor constituents such as thymoquinone, phytosterols and tocopherols. Thymoquinone content can vary substantially between oils, so it should not be represented by one universal percentage unless the specific grade is standardized and supported by a COA.
