Cardamom Oil (Elettaria cardamomum) is a natural aromatic essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the dried fruits/seeds of true cardamom, a member of the Zingiberaceae family. The oil is generally a clear, almost colourless to pale-yellow liquid with a distinctive warm, sweet, spicy, fresh and cineolic aroma. ISO 4733 defines Cardamom Oil as the essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the fruits of Elettaria cardamomum.
The characteristic composition of Cardamom Oil is dominated by α-terpinyl acetate and 1,8-cineole, together with linalyl acetate, linalool, limonene, sabinene, α-terpineol, terpinen-4-ol and other volatile constituents. The exact composition varies with geographical origin, cultivar, harvest conditions and processing. ISO 4733 provides separate compositional profiles for Central American/Guatemalan and India/Sri Lanka oils.
Cardamom Oil is particularly suitable for fine fragrance, personal care, soaps, shampoos, body care, deodorants and aromatic formulations where a refined spicy-cineolic note is desired. Cosmetic ingredient databases identify Elettaria cardamomum Seed Oil for perfuming/fragrance, masking and tonic functions.
