Cinnamon Bark Oil (Cinnamomum cassia) is a natural volatile essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the dried bark of the Cassia/Cinnamon tree. The oil is generally yellow to reddish-brown and has an intense warm, sweet, spicy and characteristic cinnamon aroma. PubChem identifies cinnamon bark oil as a steam-distilled oil, distinct from cinnamon leaf oil and cassia leaf/twig oils.
The principal characteristic constituent is (E)-cinnamaldehyde, normally representing the major portion of the oil. Other constituents include 2-methoxycinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl acetate, coumarin and minor aromatic/terpenoid constituents. ISO 3216 specifies a chromatographic profile for Chinese-type Cassia oil, including 70–88% trans-cinnamaldehyde.
Cinnamon Bark Oil is suitable for fragrance, perfumery, soaps, personal care and selected flavour applications. COSMILE Europe identifies Cinnamomum cassia Bark Oil for fragrance and flavouring functions, among others.
