Ginger Oil (Zingiber officinale) is a natural volatile essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the rhizomes of the ginger plant. The oil is generally a pale yellow to amber liquid with a characteristic warm, spicy, fresh and woody-balsamic aroma. Current commercial specifications identify Zingiber officinale rhizomes as the botanical source and steam distillation as the standard production method.
The characteristic composition of Ginger Oil varies considerably according to geographical origin, cultivar, fresh versus dried rhizomes and distillation conditions. ISO 16928 provides region-specific profiles; for Indian ginger oil, key constituents include α-zingiberene, β-sesquiphellandrene, ar-curcumene, camphene and β-bisabolene. Research on Indian ginger oils also demonstrates distinct chemotypes, with some oils being rich in zingiberene and others showing higher citral or geraniol levels.
Ginger Oil is suitable for fragrance, perfumery, personal care, hair care, soaps, body-care products and selected flavour applications. COSMILE Europe lists Zingiber officinale Root Oil for fragrance, skin conditioning and tonic functions.
