Nutmeg Essential Oil

Nutmeg Oil (Myristica fragrans) is a natural aromatic essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the dried kernels/seeds of the nutmeg fruit. It is generally a clear, colourless to pale-yellow mobile liquid with a characteristic warm, spicy, woody and slightly sweet aroma. Commercial documentation identifies steam distillation of the dried kernels as the standard production method.

The characteristic volatile profile of Nutmeg Oil is dominated by sabinene, α-pinene and β-pinene, together with myristicin, 4-terpinenol, limonene and γ-terpinene. ISO 3215 provides a defined chromatographic profile for Indonesian-type Nutmeg Oil, while EFSA's analysis of seven Indonesian batches showed similar major constituents and batch-to-batch variation.

Nutmeg Oil is primarily suited to fragrance, perfumery, soaps, personal care and selected flavour applications, where its warm spicy character is desired.
