Tea Tree Oil is a natural essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the leaves and terminal branchlets of Melaleuca alternifolia. It has a fresh, herbaceous, spicy and characteristic terpenic aroma and is widely used in cosmetics, personal care, hair care, soaps and fragrance formulations.
Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) is a natural volatile essential oil produced by steam distillation of the leaves and terminal branchlets of the Tea Tree plant. It is generally a clear, mobile, colourless to pale-yellow liquid with a fresh, characteristic, terpenic and slightly spicy-earthy aroma.
The characteristic chemical profile is dominated by terpinen-4-ol, together with γ-terpinene, α-terpinene, α-terpineol, terpinolene, p-cymene and α-pinene. The latest ISO 4730:2025 specification defines Tea Tree Oil as the terpinen-4-ol type and provides specific chromatographic ranges for these constituents.
Tea Tree Oil is widely used in cleansers, shampoos, deodorants, soaps, skin-care products, oral-care products and fragrance systems. COSMILE Europe identifies Melaleuca alternifolia Leaf Oil as an ingredient with antioxidant and fragrance functions.
