Cedarwood Oil (Atlas) is a natural aromatic essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the wood of Cedrus atlantica, commonly known as the Atlas Cedar. The oil is typically yellow to orange-brown and possesses a distinctive warm, woody, sweet and slightly balsamic fragrance with good persistence.
Its characteristic composition is dominated by himachalene-type sesquiterpenes, especially β-himachalene, α-himachalene and γ-himachalene. Commercial Atlas Cedarwood oils can show meaningful variation in composition according to botanical source, geographical origin, plant material and distillation conditions, so GC-FID/GC-MS fingerprinting should be used as the primary quality-control method rather than assigning one universal “active” percentage.
Cedarwood Oil is particularly suited to perfumery, fragrances, soaps, shampoos, conditioners, hair oils, body-care products and other personal-care formulations where a warm woody olfactory profile is desired. COSMILE Europe identifies Cedrus atlantica wood/bark oils primarily for fragrance and, depending on the INCI material, skin-conditioning functions.
