Myrrh Oil (Commiphora myrrha) is a natural aromatic essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the gum-resin exudate of the Myrrh tree. The oil is generally pale yellow to amber, sometimes appearing yellow-green to brown, with a characteristic warm, earthy, spicy, balsamic and slightly smoky aroma. Current commercial specifications describe C. myrrha oil as a resin-derived essential oil produced by steam distillation.
Unlike many coniferous essential oils that are dominated by monoterpenes, Myrrh Oil is particularly rich in furanosesquiterpenes and sesquiterpenes. Important characteristic constituents include furanoeudesma-1,3-diene, curzerene, lindestrene and related furanosesquiterpenes. Recent analytical work found furanoeudesma-1,3-diene to be the principal constituent, followed by curzerene and lindestrene, while commercial batch data show significant natural variation between origins and distillations.
Myrrh Oil is well suited to fine perfumery, incense-inspired fragrances, soaps, body care, skin-care formulations, hair care, personal care products and fragrance blends where a deep resinous base note is desired. COSMILE Europe lists Commiphora myrrha oil for fragrance, skin conditioning and tonic functions.
