Palo Santo Oil (Bursera graveolens) is a natural aromatic essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the wood, particularly aromatic heartwood, of the Palo Santo tree. The species belongs to the family Burseraceae and is native to parts of tropical America, including Ecuador and Peru.
The oil typically presents as a colourless to pale yellow liquid with a characteristic woody, sweet, resinous, balsamic and citrus-like aroma. Its volatile profile is generally dominated by limonene, together with menthofuran and α-terpineol, plus smaller amounts of carvone, germacrene D and other terpenes. Commercial GC/MS reports show limonene commonly around 60–72%, while α-terpineol and menthofuran are also prominent constituents.
Palo Santo Oil is well suited to fine fragrance, natural perfumery, soaps, body care, hair care, personal care and home-fragrance applications where a distinctive woody-citrus character is desired. PubChem identifies Bursera graveolens wood oil as a fragrance ingredient under the IFRA transparency listing.
