Sandalwood Oil

Sandalwood Oil (Santalum album) is a high-value natural essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the heartwood of the Indian Sandalwood tree. The oil is typically a clear, slightly viscous liquid ranging from almost colourless to golden yellow, with a characteristic sweet, creamy, woody, balsamic and persistent aroma. ISO 3518:2025 specifically defines sandalwood essential oil as oil obtained by steam distillation of the heartwood of Santalum album L.

The key characteristic constituents are the sesquiterpene alcohols Z-α-santalol and Z-β-santalol, which are central to the identity and quality assessment of genuine Santalum album oil. The current ISO quality profile specifies approximately 41–55% Z-α-santalol and 16–24% Z-β-santalol.

Sandalwood Oil is particularly valued in fine fragrance, luxury cosmetics, facial care, body care, soaps, bath products and fragrance compositions, where its deep, smooth and persistent woody character can function as a distinctive base note. COSMILE Europe lists Santalum album Wood Oil as a fragrance ingredient.
